Showdown at the UpYours Corral

I've never seen someone so nonchalant about a flying saucer.

The Holy Rollin' Empire

I've probably never mentioned this before, but the family that I work for is heavy on the religion. I picked up on this in my second interview when I found out which area medical network used to own the company, a network whicih is largely Seventh Day Adventists. Let me preface this by saying, this is one religion that I know little to nothing about. the only SDA I ever knew was a guy that used to play drums in a crappy band I was in - and all I recall from that is my then-boyfriend explaining to me that Frank had walked out of our movie night feature of "Pink Flamingos," because of his religious beliefs. That didn't make much sense to me, as I assumed that the movie offended everyone.

I certainly don't consider myself daft when it comes to religion, but I've found myself bewildered more than once since working here. I don't work directly with my boss. I see her once every week or two, which involves us going out to lunch, talking little about work, but a lot about shoes and why her children (all about my age) can't make good decisions. But one thing I just recently started noticing is that when we get our food...no one but me is digging in immediately. Not just my boss, but the rest of my department (only two people, nowhere near my age) prays.

This confused expression isn't on the face of an atheist or goat-worshipper - I consider myself, in very loose terms, a Christian. I see fit to bless a big meal or a holiday meal, but i don't go to church. I pray at bedtime, but not everytime I get ready to play food vs. face. I guess it's a good thign that they close their eyes, because I'm usually the only one not thanking JC for the steak quesadilla I'm about to receive. The funniest thing to me is that all three of them are not of the same religion. Now, that's not to say they can't pray - but sometimes I get the feeling that they only do it because my boss does. has anyone else experienced this? Whether it's inside or outside of work, I'm really wondering if I missed some memo that praying is the new black at business lunches.
